This Client of the Month has been a long time coming. Karen has been with us since October 2017, and is easily one of the most DEDICATED, HARD WORKING, and GIVING members of Fit For All Joliet. She will pop in for extra workouts, push you to keep going when she sees you struggling in class, and is our unofficial welcoming committee for new members (sorry, Karen, I know I still haven’t gotten you that sash yet!) She’s had an incredible weight loss journey that has led her to lose over 100lbs and she’s not slowing down anytime soon! So keep reading to learn more about this fit mama.
Can you describe any reservations you had before you started working out at Fit For All, and how we helped you overcome those?
I had belonged to gyms in the past with personal trainers and it was all about sales and not much about people or progress. I ended up feeling hoodwinked. I eventually joined an online community, but it was inconsistent– my coaches kept quitting and I felt I kept having to start over with someone new. When I first walked into FFA, I was greeted with smiles and felt super comfortable, though a little intimidated by the “bootcamp” aspect. But Josh took me through some exercises and I just felt completely empowered swinging a hammer at a tire – it was a rush!!! I also love that everyone is just super transparent and really committed to helping us be better and stronger. The other thing that really sets FFA apart is the educational aspect of the training – “Professor” Paul is ALWAYS explaining why we do a move a certain way to maximize our effort or how to prevent injury with different moves.
Describe your top 1-2 goals when you started at Fit For All and where you’re at with them now
I wanted to lose at least 30 lbs and break past the plateau I had been at for 6 months… I not only broke past that plateau, but I am down almost 50lbs since I started and that plateau is a thing of the past!
What have you achieved, both physically and mentally, so far?
Physically, I am stronger than ever. I can (slowly) run a 5K (which was on my bucket list), lift and do more than I ever dreamt. I can do lunges and squats, which I always thought would be impossible due to bad arthritic knees. But with training from Paul and Dan, my knees are better than ever and I can do so much. Mentally…. I can’t even begin to describe. I needed a gym and accountability. But the community and FAMILY I have found at FFA has been SUCH a gift that I can’t even begin to describe. The friendships and bonds and the encouragement here is second to none. Even my son loves coming to visit his friends!
How has your experience at Fit For All differed from other fitness experiences that you’ve had?
FFA has been the best so far – it’s been consistent and encouraging and works with me and everyone where they are at. I have needed my share of modifications and it’s never been a problem. I know the folks here are committed. I did an at-home program prior and while I did it, I caused some injury to myself because I wasn’t doing moves correctly. Just having a real person giving those little adjustments makes SUCH a difference.
What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who is nervous to start their own health and fitness journey?
Just take it one day at a time. Each day, each workout, is difficult. But if you keep with it, the challenges begin to change because YOU get stronger; YOU get better. And THAT feeling makes it all worth it!!!
